Dangerous Goods
Carriage of Consigned Dangerous Goods
The purpose of these Dangerous Goods Manuals (DGMs) is to stimulate an awareness of, and the potential dangers involved in, the type of goods which would be hazardous to send by air if not correctly packed, declared and documented; and to set down special requirements for the consigning, acceptance, handling, packaging, marking, stowing and documentation applicable to the carriage of dangerous goods in aircraft owned or operated by an Operator. They are designed for day to day use as a stand alone reference document, in conjunction with the current edition of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.
These manuals are for Operators that are in the business of carrying consigned third party freight containing dangerous goods on a day to day basis.
Carriage of Dangerous Goods requiring CASA Permissions
These manuals are for Operators that are frequently required to carry workers into various remote locations. It is fair and reasonable to assume that they wish to carry with them the means of cooking meals and heating water. If these workers are using mechanical devices such as brush cutters and chain saws, it must also be assumed that a limited amount of fuel needs to be carried to meet their needs. To this end, procedures are included in these manuals, together with appropriate CASA permissions and approvals, to permit Operators to transport, along with passengers, small and reasonable quantities of items such as (or similar to) the following:
- gas, liquid and solid fuels in suitable containers for cooking appliances in field locations
- fuel in suitable containers for use in hand held mechanical equipment
- sealed and unsealed batteries with isolated terminals in suitable containers and
- medical oxygen in suitable containers
